My Mother
By Simran Kaur Matta; Illustration by Shinod AP
When the heady wine of success intoxicates me,
When the itch for self-fulfilment at all cost goads me,
When I want to succeed come what may,
When I want people to hold me in high esteem.
Then the confidence which turns,
The weak into strong,
The listless into energetic,
And the dabbler into producer.
That installs in me my mother,
Is my only ally,
She discovers and upbrings,
The innate capacity in me.
For me divine are her words,
And a message of healing and light.
She floods me with knowledge
And drenches me in light.
And gives me the courage necessary to fight,
The vengeful acid she destroys in me,
She cleanses my mind and heart too,
For to attain salvation that is sure way.
Her heart so pure,
And filled with compassion,
It brings happiness to multitudes,
And brings a new life to all.
And this is why I say,
Even if the world turns upside down,
Or the creation comes to an end,
The relation between me and you,
Will never end.
