January 28, 2009: The Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, began on January 28, 2009 and will conclude on February 1, 2009. The theme of this year’s meet is ‘Shaping the Post-Crisis World’. There are around 2,600 delegates, including political and business leaders from all over the world participating in a series of discussions on economic and political issues. Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, and the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao addressed the meeting on the opening day.
The chief concern is that the economic downslide is expected to continue, and that it will affect politics and international relations. The International Monetary Fund projected a global economic growth of 0.5 percent for 2009, the worst ever figure since World War II.
The World Economic Forum was established in 1971 as the European Management Forum, and it is often simply called Davos, the name of the Swiss skiing resort where it is held each January. The founder and chairman is Klaus Schwab. Political leaders, chief executives, academics, writers and thinkers have assembled here over the years to discuss global issues including environment.
